Keyon Harrold Information
Keyon Karim Harrold (November 18, 1980) is an American jazz producer, songwriter, trumpeter, and vocalist. Harrold grew up in Ferguson, Missouri, where he was born and raised. Harrold is a graduate of The New School's School of Jazz. Miles Davis' second great quintet, Prince, Common, Dr. Dre, and J Dilla, are all influences for Harrold. Harrold's first professional employment was as a trumpeter with Common, which he landed thanks to New School classmate Robert Glasper's recommendation. In 2016, as part of Common's Tiny Desk Concert for NPR, he performed at the White House.
Harrold worked with trumpeter Charles Tolliver's large band on the studio album With Love (2006) and the concert release Emperor March: Live At The Blue Note (2007). Harrold became a well-known crossover musician, appearing in New York jazz clubs and supplying instrumentation for Gregory Porter, Mac Miller, Mary J. Blige, JAY-Z, Beyoncé, 50 Cent, and Anthony Hamilton.
In 2009, he released his debut solo album, Introducing Keyon Harrold. "It speaks well for his bright future" as one of "the leading jazz trumpet players of a new generation," according to AllMusic. The Mugician, a sequel, was released on September 29, 2017, to generally positive reviews. On August 16, 2019, Harrold and Freddie Stone appeared on WNYC's "All Of It."
