Kermit Ruffins Information
Kermit Ruffins (December 19, 1964) is an American jazz composer, singer, trumpeter, and actor. He began playing the trumpet in the eighth grade at Lawless Junior High School in New Orleans' Ninth Ward. He went to St. Peter Claver Church in Tremé and Joseph S. Clark High School in the 6th Ward. He played a tiny amount of classical music in high school at the stern band teacher's request. Through seeing his grandma in the kitchen, he learned to appreciate cooking.
When Ruffins was a student at Clark High School in the Tremé district in 1983, he co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band. In 1984, he recorded his debut songs with the band Rebirth. The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, a group of slightly older players, noted for introducing funk and modern bebop influences into New Orleans-style brass bands, served as the group's inspiration. The Rebirth frequently busked throughout New Orleans' French Quarter in exchange for tips before they attained the fame that allowed them to perform frequently at neighborhood music clubs.
In 1992, Ruffins formed the traditional jazz quintet known as the Barbecue Swingers. He is renowned for grilling food at his performances. Since the beginning of the 1990s, they have put up a weekly performance at Vaughan's Bar in the Bywater district that has drawn both locals and tourists.
