Kanekoa Information
Kanekoa, who plays "ukulele-powered Hawaiian jam-rock," is riding the tide of increasing interest in the instrument most commonly identified with the Aloha State. Kanekoa has been performing for nearly 25 years, yet the band never ceases to amaze and excite new fans by exploring new territory on the four-stringed instrument. They seldom hear anything like Kanekoa, so the crowd goes wild whenever they play.
In the early 1990s, the group Kanekoa was created by the mellow and soulful singer/rhythm ukulele player Kaulana Kanekoa, the ukulele virtuoso Vince Esquire, and the brilliant pace-maker percussionist Travis Rice. A master percussionist, Lopaka Colon, has recently joined the group, and Uncle Don Lopez, a virtuoso on the U-Bass, is the newest member. Kanekoa has pioneered innovative ground with the ukulele sound, and they're still in progress.
