David Justin Hayward (October 14, 1946) is an English singer born in Swindon, Wiltshire, England. From 1966 until the Moody Blues' 2018 breakup, he was the lead singer and guitarist for the rock band. From 1967 until 1974, he was the band's most productive songwriter and lead singer, penning several top-charting hits worldwide.
Among Hayward's contributions to the Moody Blues' discography are the songs "I Know You're Out There Somewhere," "English Sunset," "Tuesday Afternoon," "Question," "The Voice," "Nights in White Satin," and 27 of the group's singles released after 1967. He has also performed solo. His 1975 top-five UK album Blue Jays, which he co-wrote with John Lodge, was his first solo effort outside the Moody Blues. He had two UK top ten singles in 1975 ("Blue Guitar" featuring 10cc) and 1978, both of which he had a hand.
In 2018, Hayward was acknowledged for his contributions to the music business by being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a part of the Moody Blues. In 2022, he was also awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his achievements.
