Justin Steward Furstenfeld (December 14, 1975) is a musician known as the guitarist, lyricist, and lead vocalist of a Blue October rock band. Furstenfeld is also a member of the band Harvard of the South. He grew up listening to country, dance, hip-hop, and rock music. His musical influences include Pink Floyd, Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, Red House Painters, Peter Gabriel, The Smiths, Marvin Gaye, and Idaho. The first-ever musical memory for Furstenfeld was a ballad by Roy Orbison entitled “Crying.”
Furstenfeld formed the band, The Last Wish while studying at Houston’s prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. The moniker he used to perform solo is “5591”. He has written more than 500 songs so far and counts among his influences U2, Jean-Michael Basquiat, George Winston, Blue Miller, Elliott Smith, Peter Gabriel, and The Pixies. He also co-wrote and performed guest vocals on the Canvas song entitled “All About You.”
Furstenfeld embarked on a tour in August 2008 with Stephenie Meyer, the author of the Twilight series. His performance style has been likened to the “Fish” of Marillion, Genesis, and Peter Gabriel. In 2014, Furstenfeld released his debut solo album entitled “Songs from an Open Book.” His next solo album came out in 2017 entitled “Open Book Winter Album.”
Furstenfeld has released several notable albums with Blue October, such as This Is What I Live For (2020), I Hope You’re Happy (2018), Home (2016), Sway (2013), and Any Man in America (2011).
