Juan Diego (January 13, 1973) is a Peruvian operatic tenor. He was born in Lima, Peru. The Rossini Festival in Pesaro, Italy, the location of Rossini's birth, was where Flórez made his professional debut in 1996. When Bruce Ford was sick during Matilde di Shabran's production, he stepped in at age 23 to sing the main tenor role. In the same year, he made his operatic debut as the Danish Knight (Chevalier danois) in Gluck's Armide at La Scala; he sang the role of Georges in Meyerbeer's L'étoile du Nord at the Wexford Festival Opera.
In 1997, he made his debut at London's Covent Garden, singing the role of Count Potoski in the first-ever concert performance of Donizetti's Elisabetta. After that, he debuted as Count Almaviva in Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Vienna State Opera in 1999 and the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2002.
After receiving an "overwhelming ovation" on the first night of Donizetti's La fille du régiment at La Scala on February 20, 2007, Flórez sang the aria "Ah! mes amis" with its nine high C's again, breaking the theater's 74-year-old tradition of no encores. As the first vocalist to do so since 1994, he gave an encore performance of the same solo work at New York's Metropolitan Opera House on April 21, 2008. Several honors and accolades have been bestowed upon Flórez by his nation.
