Joshua Redman Information
Joshua Redman (February 1, 1969) is an American jazz composer and saxophonist from Berkeley, California. His father was a jazz saxophonist, Dewey Redman, while his mother was a dancer and librarian, Renee Shedroff. Redman was exposed to several kinds of music at the Center for World Music in Berkeley. A few of his earliest lessons in music and improvisation were with gamelan player Jody Diamond on the recorder. He began playing and exploring music at a young age. He started playing clarinet at age nine before switching to the tenor saxophone that became his primary instrument. Some of his beloved musical influences are Ornette Coleman, Cannonball Adderley, Beatles, Aretha Franklin, the Temptations, Earth, Wind and Fire, Led Zeppelin, Prince, the Police, and his father, Dewey Redman. Joshua graduated from Berkeley High School (1986), and summa cum laude in 1991 with a degree in Social Studies from Harvard University.
After graduation, Joshua began jamming and gigging regularly with some of the leading jazz musicians of his generation such as Mark Turner, Peter Bernstein, Roy Hargrove, Christian McBride, Brad Mehldau, Peter Martin, Kevin Hays, Pat Metheny, Jorge Rossy, Charlie Haden, and a few more. Warner Bros. Records signed redman, and in the spring of 1993, Joshua issued the first self-titled album that earned him his first Grammy nomination. This was followed by Wish (Warner Bros., 1993), Moodswing (Warner Bros., 1994), Blues for Pat: Live In San Francisco (Jazz Door, 1995), Timeless Tales for Changing Times (Warner Bros., 1998), Back East (Nonesuch, 2007), though the list goes on.
