Jonathan Richman Information
Jonathan Michael Richman (May 16, 1951) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Natick. He started playing music as well as writing his songs in the mid-1960s. In 1969, Richman moved to New York City, where he lived on the couch of their manager, Steve Sesnick. He could not make it and soon returned to Boston. Richman founded the Modern Lovers in 1970. He is known for his rock and roll-influenced music, childlike outlook, and wide eyes.
Richman moved to California in 1975 to record as a solo singer and songwriter with an independent record label, Beserkley Records. The same year, he released his first compilation record entitled Beserkley Chartbusters. He also put together a new version of the Modern Lovers in January 1976. Richman mostly performed as a solo act from 1988 to 1992 to support his Rounder albums such as Having a Party with Jonathan Richman (1991), Jonathan Goes Country (1990), and Jonathan Richman (1990).
Richman also contributed to the track entitled “Hit Nights.” It was recorded to the AIDS-benefit album, No Alternative, produced by the Red Hot Organization. He has a long list of solo studio albums, including I, Jonathan (1992), ¡Jonathan, Te Vas a Emocionar! (1994), You Must Ask the Heart (1995), Surrender to Jonathan (1996), I’m So Confused (1998), Radio On/Stop And Shop with the Modern Lovers (1998), Not So Much to be Loved as to Love (2004), and Because Her Beauty Is Raw and Wild (2008).
