Johnny Nicholas Information
Johnny Nicholas (1948) is an American blues musician best known for his Grammy Award-winning group named “Asleep at the Wheel.” Nicholas was raised in Rhode Island, where he formed his first band named “The Vikings.” This band used to perform cover versions of the popular rhythm and blues hits of that time. He also formed “Black Cat Blues Band” in the 1960s. The group was created with Duke Robillard, Steve Nardella, and Fran Christina. Nicholas moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1974, where he joined “Big Walter Horton” and began playing with them.
He has worked with a few record labels such as Bona Dea Music and Top Cat Records. In 1978, Nicholas began his stint with Asleep at the Wheel when he was asked by the band to perform with them. From 1980 to almost 1990, Nicholas took a break from many music-related things so he can raise a family. He returned to music recording in 1991 and recorded blues music with Snooky Pryor and Johnny Shines. The album on which they created together was entitled “Back to the Country.”
Johnny Nicholas has released a few notable albums throughout his musical career that are Too Many Bad Habits (1978), Broke Again (1988), Thrill on the Hill (1994), Rockin’ My Blues to Sleep (2001), Livin’ with the Blues (2005), Texas All-Star: Big Band Bash (2006), Future Blues (2012), The Golden Triangle: Swamp Blues (2012). Fresh Air (2016), and Too Many Bad Habits – Rereleased (2017).
