John Royce Mathis is a singer of popular music. While he first found success with standard-style singles, it was as an album artist that Mathis truly made his mark; of his 73 studio albums, several dozen were certified gold or platinum. He was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and earned the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. A total of 360 million recordings were sold by Mathis, making him the third best-selling musician of the 20th century.
Mathis received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2003. The National Trustees of the Music Academy decide who will get the Special Merit Award in recognition of their great artistic achievements in the music industry during their lifetimes.
After performing in Ohio in November 2015, Mathis returned to find his Hollywood home had been damaged in a fire. His 56 years of ownership were up. The hillside in front of the restored Mathis home in the Hollywood Hills collapsed after being pounded by a series of violent storms on January 17, 2023, crushing a silver Jaguar beneath the weight of the debris and dirt. After the avalanche, Mathis' hilltop residence lost power, leaving his water pipelines and other equipment vulnerable to the elements.
