John Pizzarelli Trio Information
John Paul Pizzarelli Jr. (April 6, 1960) is an American jazz vocalist and guitarist. He was born in Paterson, New Jersey, and started to play the guitar when he was six. In college, he began to play the trumpet. As a teenager, he had already performed with Clark Terry, Slam Stewart, Zoot Sims, Les Paul, and Benny Goodman. He further attended William Paterson University and the University of Tampa. In the 1980s, he had established himself as a jazz guitarist and vocalist.
Pizzarelli released his debut solo album, I’m Hip (Please Don’t Tell My Father), in 1983. He started his career by forming a trio with Martin Pizzarelli, his younger brother, and Ray Kennedy during the 1990s. The trio got a chance to open for Frank Sinatra in 1993.
Pizzarelli appeared as a star in “Dream,” a Broadway show devoted to Johnny Mercer’s music in 1997. He named Nat King Cole as his inspiration for music. Pizzarelli has hosted a national radio show named Radio Deluxe with John Pizzarelli and his wife, actress, and singer, Jessica Molaskey.
Pizzarelli has worked with many other musicians and groups, including the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, Buddy DeFranco, Johnny Frigo, Rosemary Clooney, and George Shearing. As a trio leader, he released numerous notable albums, including Hit That Jive, Jack! (1985), Sing! Sing! Sing! (1987), My Blue Heaven (1990), All of Me (1992), Naturally (1993), New Standards (1994), and Dear Mr. Cole (1994).
