John Kay Information
John Kay (April 12, 1944) was born as Joachim Fritz Krauledat in Tilsit, East Prussia, German Reich, now Sovetsk, Kaliningrad, Russia. His origin takes us back to Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. John Kay is a German-born Canadian rock singer, guitarist, and songwriter. His childhood was full of obstacles, and he suffered from eye problems at a young age. Due to this, John Kay used to listen to broadcasts by the British Forces Broadcasting Service.
John Kay was invited by a fellow German-born bass player Nick St. Nicholas to join a band named The Sparrows. The group later changed its name to Steppenwolf, and along with Kay, it gained international success with singles including "Magic Carpet Ride," "Monster," "Born to Be Wild," "The Pusher," and "Rock Me." John Kay recorded solo and with Steppenwolf for some time. Some of the notable albums released with the band include At Your Birthday Party, Hour of the Wolf, Live In London (John Kay and Steppenwolf album), Skullduggery, Rock & Roll Rebels, and Feed the Fire.
As a solo artist, John Kay released the following studio albums: Forgotten Songs and Unsung Heroes, My Sportin' Life, All in Good Time, Lone Steppenwolf (compilation), The Lost Heritage Tapes, and Heretics and Privateers. His solo singles include "I'm Movin' On," "Moonshine (Friend of Mine)," and "Easy Evil."
Although Kay never received Canadian nationality, in 2004, he was still inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame since his musical career began in Toronto. He was also nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as part of Steppenwolf, in 2017.
