Joanie Leeds sings in the band Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights and plays guitar. Her legal name is Joan Leibowitz. As a child, she took voice lessons and was involved in school choirs. In her high school years, Leeds took part in musical theatre performances and taught herself how to play the guitar. Leeds majored in musical theatre and drama at Syracuse University. She started to write her original music and recorded her debut album during her senior year of college.
Leeds began writing and recording children's music right after her graduation. She also began working as a children's music specialist at preschools in New York City. Her first full-length CD, My Job Application Knows More about Me That You Do, was recorded in 2000. After moving to New York City, she took a bartending job at the Greenwich Village music club, The Bitter End. Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights used to sing there as a professional rock musician and started her record label, Limbostar. She also started her own publishing company through BMI, named Zameret Music.
Joanie Leeds and The Nightlights sang in many clubs for many years, such as CBGB's Gallery, Arlene's Grocery, The Living Room, and The Bitter End. Some of her notable studio albums are 'Soul From My Footsteps' (2003), 'City Kid' (2008), 'Challah, Challah' (2009), 'I'm a Rock Star' (2010), 'What a Zoo.' (2011), 'Bandwagon' (2013), 'Brooklyn Baby!' (2017), and 'All the Ladies' (2020).
