Jeff Lorber Information
Jeffrey H. Lorber (November 4, 1952) is an American keyboardist, record producer, and composer. He was born in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania, the same suburb as Randy and Michael Brecker. Lorber began playing the piano at four, and as a teen, he played in several R&B bands and attended Berklee College of Music. While studying, Lorber developed his love for jazz. He also met and played with guitarist John Scofield during college. In 1972, Lorber moved to Vancouver, Washington, and studied chemistry at Boston University for several years.
Lorber formed his first group, The Jeff Lorber Fusion, and released a self-titled debut album in 1977 on Inner City Records. It was supported by a revolving cast of musicians, including Dennis Bradford (drummer). The group released another album in 1980 entitled “Wizard Island,” which introduced saxophonist Kenneth Bruce Gorelick, better known as Kenny G.
Lorber started a solo career by releasing a 1982 album entitled “It’s a Fact.” The album explored his roots in R&B with more synthesizer-heavy and smoother sound. He released his second solo album in 1984 named, In the Heat of the Night. His keyboard work predominantly appeared in the video game called Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Jeff Lorber has worked with several record labels throughout his career, including Inner City, Blue Note, Narada, Zebra, Verve, Warner Bros, Arista, and Peak. His other notable solo albums include Step by Step (1985), Private Passion (1986), Worth Waiting For (1993), and West Side Stories (1994).
