Janis Ian Information
Janis Ian (April 7, 1951) was born as Janis Eddy Fink in New York City. She is an American folk singer-songwriter and author. Janis Fink was primarily raised in New Jersey, initially on a farm. She attended East Orange High School in East Orange and later went to the New York City High School of Music & Art. As a child, Ian was fond of the work of folk pioneers such as Joan Baez and Odetta. By the age of two, she started with piano lessons, and when she was a teenager, Ian started playing the organ, harmonica, French horn, and guitar.
"Hair of Spun Gold" was the first song that Ian wrote when she was 12. The song was subsequently published in the folk publication Broadside. She legally changed her name to Janis Ian in 1964. "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)" was written and recorded by Ian at only 14. The track was produced by George "Shadow" Morton and released three times from 1965 to 1967. It turned out to be a national hit upon its third release after Leonard Bernstein featured the song in Inside Pop: The Rock Revolution, a CBS TV special.
Some of the notable studio albums by Ian are For All the Seasons of Your Mind (1967), Who Really Cares (1969), Present Company (1971), Miracle Row (1977), Restless Eyes (1981), Hunger (1997), Billie's Bones (2004), and Strictly Solo (2014). She also released many compilation albums and hit singles.
As an author, Ian published five writings, including Who Really Cares: Poems From Childhood and Early Youth in 1969, Songbook in 1999, Stars: Original Stories Based on the Songs of Janis Ian in 2003, and "Prayerville," the same year.
