James Hunter Six Information
Essex, England-based soul-blues group The James Hunter Six has a weathered yet buttery soft voice that has made the trio a recording and touring hit, it is supported by their warm, earthy sound, which offers nuanced musical accompaniment. Jonathan Lee on drums, Andrew Kingslow on keyboards and percussion, Lee Badau on baritone saxophone, Damian Hand on tenor saxophone, and Jason Wilson on bass make up their line-up.
Despite having played together since the 1990s, the James Hunter Six only joined Daptone for the release of the Gabriel Roth (as Bosco Mann)–produced Minute by Minute in 2013. Hold On! was the group's 2016 album, recorded at Penrose Recorders in Riverside, California, directly to an eight-track tape. A similar procedure was used for Whatever It Takes in 2018.
Following an enormously successful global tour, Hunter relocated to New York and altered the band's line-up. Before leaving for California to work with producer Bosco Mann at Daptone's Pemrose Studios, Hunter switched from his British band to an American one made up of jazz and R&B players. Victor Axelrod, sometimes known as "Ticklah," on piano, Adam Scone on organ, Rudy Albin Petschauer on drums, Myles Weeks on bass, Michael Buckley on baritone saxophone, and Freddy DeBoe on tenor saxophone made up the new James Hunter Six.
The album Nick of Time, released through Daptone in March amid tours of the United States and the United Kingdom, was announced in December with the rhumba-infused single "I Can Change Your Mind." Guest keyboardist Matt Slocum assisted the band in these concerts. A collection of ballads and love songs titled With Love on Valentine's Day 2022 was recorded in the studio by James Hunter Six and Mann in late 2021.
