He learned to play the piano and guitar from his maternal grandmother, a country musician loosely connected to the Grand Ole Opry. She was frequently appalled by his attempts to learn rock 'n' roll.

Billy Gordon (lead guitar/vocals), Logan Davis (bass/vocals), and Steve Colmus made up The Business (drums). The group was renowned for its upbeat live performances and piano player Walston's pounding technique. Late in 2019, the group announced on social media that they would break up at the end of the year.
