Isobel Campbell Information
Isobel Campbell (April 27, 1976) is a Scottish cellist, singer, and songwriter. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland. By the time she was 19, she had already achieved moderate success as a member of the indie pop band Belle & Sebastian, but she had already left the band to pursue a solo career, first as The Gentle Waves and then under her name. They went on to make three albums together later on. Singer-songwriter, chamber pop, and indie pop are all labels applied to Campbell's music.
Campbell's music is consistently soft and melancholy; he frequently employs classical instruments. Campbell's debut solo album, The Green Fields of Foreverland, was released in 1999 under the alias The Gentle Waves on the same label as Belle & Sebastian, Jeepster Records. Swansong for You, their follow-up to 2000's The Green Fields of Foreverland, was released that November. Campbell announced that this album would be his last as The Gentle Waves.
Ghost of Yesterday, an album of Billie Holiday covers, was released by Creeping Bent in 2002 and featured her collaboration with Scottish jazz musician Bill Wells. She came out with a new album titled Amorino under her name in 2003. Bill Wells and some other jazz performers got some spotlight time this time. Reviewers praised her follow-up, 2006's Ballad of the Broken Seas, which featured a duet with ex-Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan.
