Incognito Information
Incognito plays psychedelic jazz music from Britain. Jazz Funk, their first album, came out in 1981. The band's frontman, guitarist, songwriter, and producer is Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick. Carleen Anderson, Joy Malcolm, Maysa Leak, Tony Momrelle, Imaani, Mo Brandis, Vanessa Haynes, Carleen Muriel, Pamela (PY) Anderson, and Kelli Sae are all former band members.
The Red Hot Organization's 1994 compilation CD Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool included Incognito. Time magazine named the album "Album of the Year," praising its efforts to bring attention to and financial assistance for the African American community's fight against the AIDS pandemic. The band's 1996 single "Water to Drink" was included on Red Hot + Rio, an AIDS fundraiser album co-produced by the Red Hot Organization.
For their 40th anniversary in 2021, the band republished Jazz Funk, their debut album, which included 106 tracks. The pioneers of British funk have now dropped a music video for their single "You Are in My System."
The 52-page booklet with the deluxe release includes Charles Waring's liner notes and some pictures from the band's archive. In October 2022, the band received the inaugural recipient as part of Universal Music Recording's "Black Story" series, which celebrates Black British musicians in commemoration of Black History Month in the UK.
