Horse Feathers Information
Horse Feathers is an indie folk band. The group's current lineup consists of Robby Cosenza, J. Tom Hnatow, Nathan Crockett, and Justin Ringle. In 2004, singer/songwriter Justin Ringle relocated from his native Idaho to Portland, Oregon, where he began performing acoustic music under the alias Horse Feathers at open mic nights. After hearing a few of Ringle's demos in 2005, multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick offered to help with the production.
In February 2006, the duo recorded their debut album, Words Are Dead, at Skyler Norwood's Miracle Lake studios. The Portland label Lucky Madison released the album in September of the same year. Towards the end of that year, Peter's sister Heather Broderick joined the band on cello, and by 2007, Horse Feathers had a revolving cast of instrumentalists accompanying Ringle's guitar and vocals. After a brief hiatus, Ringle and the Brodericks returned to the Miracle Lake studios in the fall and winter of 2007 to record House With No Home, released on Kill Rock Stars in the spring of 2008.
In 2012, the band dropped their fourth studio album, Cynic's New Year. Despite having lower sales than their prior album, the album nonetheless made it onto the Billboard rankings. So It Is with Us, the fifth studio album by Horse Feathers, premiered on NPR on October 12, 2014, and was released on CD, vinyl, and digital download through Kill Rock Stars on October 21, 2014.
