Hiroshima Information
Hiroshima is an American band that was formed in the year 1974. The band originated from Los Angeles, California. It incorporates Japanese instruments in its music, and the music is defined as pop, world music, smooth jazz, and R&B. Hiroshima has proudly sold over 4 million albums all across the globe. The current lineup of the band is composed of Dan Kuramoto (flute), June Kuramoto (koto), Danny Yamamoto (drums, keyboards, taiko, percussion), Kimo Cornwell (keyboards), and Dean Cortez (bass, guitar). Some of the past members are Johnny Mori (1974–2003), Dane Matsumura (bass guitar, 1977–1980), Jess Acuna (vocals, 1977–1982), Peter Hata (guitar, 1974–1984), and many others.
Dan Kuramoto is the leader of the band. He is from East Los Angeles and attended California State University, Long Beach. While playing in a band on weekends, Dan Kuramoto met June Kuramoto, a Japanese native. Later, other group members were met, and ultimately Hiroshima formed. The band is named after the Japanese city Hiroshima, which was mostly destroyed at the end of WWII by an atomic weapon.
The debut solo album by Hiroshima sold 100,000+ copies in just the first three months. It was followed by Ongaku, Third Generation, Another Place, Go, East, Urban World Music, Between Black and White, The Bridge, Spirit of the Season, J-Town Beat, Songs with Words, and a few more.
Hiroshima earned the Visionary Award by East West Players, which is one of the oldest Asian Pacific American theatre companies in the state. The award was given for the band’s impact on the Asian Pacific American (APA) community with the help of artistic excellence.
