Hiatus Kaiyote Information
Haitus Kaiyote is an Australian jazz/funk band. It was formed in 2011. The group's current lineup consists of Simon Mavin, Perrin Moss, Paul Bender, and Nai Palm. At the 2011 Bohemian Masquerade Ball, which featured sword swallowers, fire twirlers, and gypsy deathcore bands, Hiatus Kaiyote performed for the first time. The concert was held in Melbourne, Australia, in February of 2012. McFerrin was so taken with their sound that he shared it with DJ and record label owner Gilles Peterson.
Tawk Tomahawk, the band's debut album, was released in April 2012. Artists as diverse as Animal Collective and Dirty Projectors took note, and the band went on to gain public endorsements from Erykah Badu, Questlove, and Prince. The band's debut album, Choose Your Weapon, entered the US charts at position number 127 on the Billboard 200 and 11 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. The album's track "Breathing Underwater" was nominated for a 58th Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance.
Popular rap and R&B singers, starting with Anderson, have been sampling Hiatus Kaiyote tracks since 2016, sampled from "Molasses" by Anderson.Paak in "Without You" from his Malibu album. Drake sampled "Building a Ladder" in "Free Smoke" from his playlist More Life the following year, while the following year, Kendrick Lamar sampled "Atari" on "Duckworth" from his album Damn.
