Herbie Hancock Information
Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (April 12, 1940) is an American jazz drummer, bandleader, and songwriter born in Chicago, Illinois. As a trumpeter, Hancock got his start in the industry with the band of Donald Byrd. Not long after, he became a key member of Miles Davis's quintet, where he revolutionized the function of the jazz rhythm section and contributed to the development of the post-bop style.
Hancock explored jazz fusion, funk, and electro genres using many synthesizers and electronics in the 1970s. Head Hunters, his most famous and consequential record, came out around this time.
Jazz classics "Cantaloupe Island," "Watermelon Man," "Maiden Voyage," and "Chameleon" are among Hancock's most famous works. His partnership with bassist/producer Bill Laswell on the electronic instrumental "Rockit" was a smash hit in the '80s.
With his 2007 tribute album River: The Joni Letters, Hancock became just the second jazz record to win Album of the Year, following 1965's Getz/Gilberto. He has also won 14 Grammys and an Academy Award.
Hancock was a Glastonbury Festival performer on June 26, 2022. Domi and JD Beck, a jazz combo, published their debut album NOT TiGHT on July 29, 2022, and the single "MOON" included Hancock. Hancock performed at the Eko Hotel in Lagos, Nigeria's Arise Fashion Week & Jazz Festival, on February 4, 2023.
