Great American Beer Festival Information
The Great American Beer Festival, GABF, is a festival that celebrates beer and is held annually in Denver, Colorado. It is sponsored and organized by the Brewers Association. The event is now staged in the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. This is where it has been hosted in the past between the months of late September and early October.
It was first held in 1982 and has since grown to become the most attended beer festival in the United States and one of the most attended in the world. Charlie Papazian, a brewer, founded the Great American Beer Festival (GABF). The first festival was held with the annual conference of the American Homebrewers Association in Boulder, Colorado, in June 1982. There were 24 participating breweries and 47 beers at the event.
The week before the main competition, a secret event is held when judges taste the beers that will compete in the related competition and give medals in over one hundred different beer style categories. In 2019, there were 322 judges on the panel who were from 18 different nations and who collectively evaluated nearly 9,400 beers. The Great American Beer Festival, held in 2019, featured 800 brewers and 4,000 beers.
