Gerald Clayton Information
Gerald William Clayton (May 11, 1984) is a Dutch-born American jazz composer and pianist. Clayton received his education at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, the USC Thornton School of Music (where he studied piano under Billy Childs), and the Manhattan School of Music (he studied along with Kenny Barron).
Furthermore, Clayton has been traveling and recording with saxophone great Charles Lloyd since early 2013. In 2016, he will lead his trio of Ravi Coltrane, Nicolas Payton, and Raul Midón for the second time as Musical Director of the Monterey Jazz Festival On Tour. Clayton's albums The Paris Sessions (Concord) (2012) and Life Forum (2013) were nominated for Grammy Awards (Concord).
Battle Circle, from the Clayton Brothers' New Song and Dance album, earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Composition in 2010. The improvisational jazz solo he recorded for the song "All of You" by Cole Porter on his debut album, Two-Shade, earned him a nomination for Best Improvised Jazz Solo in 2009. Brother to Brother, by the Clayton Brothers, is nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Album. This album features Gerald Clayton on piano and a general theme of tunes made popular by Thad, Hank, and Elvin Jones.
