George Winston Information
George Winston (December 26, 1949) is an American pianist born in Michigan and raised in Montana, Florida, and Mississippi. His interest in Jazz, pop, rock, and R&B genres grew throughout his childhood. He was inspired to play the organ in 1967 after hearing The Doors. Winston switched to solo piano in 1971 after hearing some of the stride pianists such as Cleo Brown, Donald Lambert, Earl Hines, Teddy Wilson, and Thomas “Fats” Waller.
Winston majored in sociology from Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, in the 1960s. He was first recorded for Takoma Records by John Fahey and released his debut album entitled “Piano Solos,” but the album did not get much attention. The album was reissued in 1972 under the titled “Ballads and Blues” on his record label, Dancing Cat Records. Winston describes his pieces as “rural folk piano.” It was a style that he developed in 1971 just to complement the uptempo stride piano.
Winston has appeared as a solo guest on show 575 of the multimedia called “WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour.” He has worked with many different record labels throughout his careers, such as RCA, Sony Classical, Takoma, and Windham Hill. Winston has released multiple notable studio albums so far including Autumn (1972), Winter into Spring (July 27, 1982), December (1982), Summer (October 8, 1991), Forest (October 11, 1994), and Linus and Lucy – The Music of Vince Guaraldi (September 17, 1996).
