George Wein Information
George Wein (October 3, 1925) is an American producer, pianist, and jazz promoter. The Newport Jazz Festival, which takes place every summer in Newport, Rhode Island, was started by him. Along with Pete Seeger and Theodore Bikel, he co-founded the Newport Folk Festival and played a key role in establishing the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
After receiving his degree, Wein launched the Storyville jazz club at the Copley Square Hotel in Boston. Although the club started well, it had to close after just six weeks. Later, it would reopen at the nearby Buckminster Hotel. Wein eventually founded the Storyville record label. He also instructed a jazz history course at Boston University.
The first outdoor jazz festival in the United States was held in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1954. It established a yearly tradition. After that, Louis and Elaine Lorillard persuaded Wein to put it on with sponsorship. Later, Wein helped organize various events in other places, such as the Newport Folk Festival, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and the Playboy Jazz Festival in Los Angeles.
