George Thorogood Information
George Lawrence Thorogood (February 24, 1950) is an American singer, musician, and songwriter. Being inspired by a John P. Hammond concert in 1970, Thorogood started as a solo artist in the vein of Robert Johnson and Elmore James. With his high school buddy and drummer Jeff Simon, he started the Delaware Destroyers band in 1973. The band expanded and found its sound, combining Chicago blues and rock and roll.
Maverick and Born to Be Bad, two more albums by Thorogood and his band from the '80s, earned platinum. The former includes "I Drink Alone," a concert favorite, and "Willie and the Hand Jive," a cover of Johnny Otis's song that reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Although "Get a Haircut" peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart in 1992, Thorogood's popularity declined throughout the decade. Thorogood received recognition as one of the "50 Most Influential Delawareans of the Past 50 Years" in 2012. In 2017, he released Party of One, his first genuine solo album.
Thorogood received the MMP Music Award and was inducted into the Mississippi Music Project Hall of Fame in Biloxi, Mississippi, on March 14, 2020. On April 11, 2023, Thorogood's social media pages revealed he was gravely ill. However, they did not specify what was wrong with him. This resulted in the cancellation of all tour dates from April 27 to May 21.
