GE Smith Information
George Edward Smith (January 27, 1952) is an American guitarist born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. During the band's prime (from 1979 to 1985), Smith was Hall & Oates' lead guitarist, contributing to five top-ten hits. In 1985, during a break from Hall & Oates, Smith became the bandleader and co-musical director of the Saturday Night Live Band on the NBC sketch comedy series.
Smith's impressive list of collaborators includes such legends as David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Roger Waters, Tina Turner, Tracy Chapman, Tom Waits, and Dan Hartman, among many more. From 1988 through 1990, he was Bob Dylan's lead guitarist on the Never Ending Tour. In 1992, he directed Dylan's 30th Anniversary Concert Celebration at Madison Square Garden and played guitar. Smith played rhythm, lead, and bass guitar in one of the most successful concert tours ever, Roger Waters' The Wall Live tour, which ran from 2010 to 2013.
He was nominated for a Grammy in 1997 for his work with the Saturday Night Live Band on the album Live! The Real Deal and he won an Emmy in 2000 for the show's 25th anniversary special. His many solo albums are 1981's In the World, 1993's Get a Little (with the Saturday Night Live Band), 1998's Incense, Herbs & Oils, and 2020's Stony Hill (with Leroy Bell).
