Furnace Fest Information
Over three days, the American music festival Furnace Fest takes place at Birmingham, Alabama's Sloss Furnaces National Historical Landmark. From 2000 to 2003, it occurred every August, and beginning in 2021, it has occurred every September. Six editions of Furnace Fest have occurred as of 2022, the most recent being September 23-25.
2000 Christian hardcore record label owner Chad Johnson started the festival in Birmingham, Alabama. Even though many of the bands playing Furnace Fest were Christian hardcore, metalcore, and emo acts, the festival did not have a religious theme. After Tooth & Nail Records acquired Takehold Records in March 2002, Johnson had to relocate to Seattle, Washington, casting doubt on the festival's continued existence.
After a successful third installment in August 2002, Johnson explored moving the festival to Seattle for a while. 3B Studios published a DVD video from Furnace Fest 2002 in August 2003. In 2003, Shannon Schlappi, owner of the hardcore record label Anxiety Records in Independence, Missouri, took over the organization of Furnace Fest and successfully put on a fourth edition of the festival at the same venue.
