Funk Flex Information
Funkmaster Flex (August 5, 1968) is an American host, DJ, and record producer. He was born in New York City. He started at WRKS 98.7 Kiss-FM in New York, working alongside fellow Bronxite Chuck Chillout at 19. He eventually departed KISS and did some time at 107.5 WBLS-FM. Flex used to regularly perform at clubs owned and controlled by Vito Bruno back in the early 1990s.
Later, Bruno persuaded Joel Salkowitz, regional vice president of Hot 97, to start broadcasting live from the clubs where he was performing. Urban radio programming hours were increased once it became clear that Hip Hop's fall from the '80s would soon be reversed. By the mid-1990s, Flex had landed a record deal with major label Loud Records for a series of mixtapes titled 60 Minutes of Funk. The RIAA in the United States has awarded all four of them with its highest gold certification.
Along with seven other prominent New York City DJs (including Biz Markie, "BounceMasta" Doo Wop, Big Kap, DJ Enuff, Mister Cee, Frankie Cutlass, DJ Riz, Cipha Sounds, and Mark Ronson), he founded The Flip Squad in 1995. In late 1998, MCA published their debut album titled "Yo!" MTV Raps, hosted by Fab 5 Freddy, DJ Myth, Ed Lover, and Doctor Dré, was where viewers were first introduced to Funkmaster Flex in the early '90s. As time passed, he did commercials for MTV, including rap music and cars.
