Frost Amphitheater, located on the Stanford University campus in Stanford, California, was built in 1937 as a gift from the Frost family, whose son had graduated from Stanford in 1935 but died of polio the following year. The 20-acre grassy and forested site is arranged in tiers for optimal viewing.
Before 1984, the University's spring commencement ceremonies were held there. However, the ceremonies were moved to Stanford Stadium to accommodate a larger crowd of family and friends. Frost Amphitheater has recently undergone extensive renovations, including the installation of a brand-new stage and the addition of improved accessibility amenities, to bring the venue up to date with the needs of current acts and audiences.
Many concerts occur there throughout the year, in addition to the annual Frost Music and Arts Festival. There were 14 performances by the Grateful Dead at that theater.
