The Saratoga Jazz Festival has been held annually in Saratoga Springs, New York, since 1978. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) is a picturesque venue for the Freihofer's Saratoga Jazz Festival. It is one of the country's historic theaters, similar to Vienna's Wolf Trap or Chicago's Ravinia. The festival took place from June 24th to the 25th and featured performances by Snarky Puppy, Hiromi, Bonnie Raitt, Pat Metheny, and many more.
Danny Melnick, who began producing and curating the event in 1992 under jazz entrepreneur George Wein and Event Productions, produces and curates it. Since his legendary Newport Jazz Festival came about unusually, Wein has a good case for being the festival's founder—or at least a co-founder. It all began in 1954 with the jazz festival that would become the gold standard for similar events for decades.
Like many jazz festivals, Saratoga includes an educational component because of its relationship with Skidmore College, which is close by and has a renowned Jazz Institute. On the festival's first day, Skidmore begins its highly regarded two-week summer program for high school students, which bassist Todd Coolman leads.
