Freestyle Love Supreme Information
Freestyle Love Supreme is an American improv musical/comedy assembly by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Anthony Veneziale in 2004 and directed by Thomas Kail. From 2019 to 2020, the group also performed a Broadway musical with the same name at Booth Theatre. The Freestyle Love Supreme idea started during rehearsal breaks for the first Broadway musical of Lin-Manuel Miranda entitled “In the Heights.”
Freestyle Love Supreme was a project for young artists to experiment with musical and theatre sound. The performer’s beatbox and rap while being backed by keyboards during the show. Many of the group members also appeared in 2009’s The Electric Company revival for several episodes. The regular music contributors were Sullivan, Jackson, Sherman, and Miranda. In 2014, Freestyle Love Supreme created a television series that consists of 10-episodes and aired on Pivot.
Freestyle Love Supreme and its story have been featured in a 2020 documentary entitled “We Are Freestyle Love Supreme.” It was directed by Andrew Fried, who began to film the group back in 2005.
The vocal performers for the Freestyle Love Supreme include Lin-Manuel Miranda, Anthony Veneziale, Chris Sullivan, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Chris Jackson, Kaila Mullady, Andrew Bancroft, Daveed Diggs, James Monroe Iglehart, Wayne Brady, Ashley Perez Flanagan, and Aneesa Folds. Arthur Lewis, Bill Sherman, Ian Weinberger, Kurt Crowley, and Alan Markley are keyboardists.
