Fred Hersch Information
Fred Hersch (October 31, 1955) is an American composer and pianist born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the first solo pianist to play weekly stints at New York's legendary Village Vanguard. More than seventy of his jazz pieces have been recorded. Hersch has been on the Jazz Studies faculty at the New England Conservatory since 1980 (with pauses) and has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards.
In 1987, he played piano for Eddie Daniels's quartet, and their performance can be heard on Daniels's album To Bird with Love. Hersch and his quintet performed at the Willow Jazz Club in Somerville, Massachusetts 1988. One reviewer for the Boston Globe called him "an elegant, highly melodic player." Hersch recorded with Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer in his basement studio from 1989. Fred Hersch at Maybeck, his debut album as a pianist, was released in 1993.
Fred Hersch's ninth solo album, Fred Hersch Plays Jobim, was released by Palmetto Records in 2009. His 2006 album, Fred Hersch in Amsterdam: Live at the Bimhuis, was also a solo effort. In 2008, Hersch led a Professional Training Workshop for Young Musicians at The Weill Institute at Carnegie Hall, and he has also taught at The New School and Manhattan School of Music.
