Five Alarm Funk is one of the horn-powered, percussion-fueled sonic bands. The band was founded in Vancouver in May 2003. From the past 17 years of hard funking, the group has burned up countless stages on four continents. The current lineup of the band consists of Gabe Boothroyd – Guitar, Oliver Gibson – Guitar, Tayo Branston – Drums/Vocals, Tom Towers - Congas/Vocals, Kent Wallace – Trumpet, Tim Parent – Bass, and Brent Mah – Sax.
Five Alarm Funk has released six studio albums and received two Juno Award nominations from Canadian Grammys. The band released their 7th studio album entitled Big Smoke in 2020. The band consists of 11 tracks that are full of epic, intense arrangements, heavy grooves, and fun-full tone. According to the band members, this album is their funkiest and most energized album ever created.
Big Smokes features two collaborations, with the legendary Bootsy Collins on We Play, The Funk, and the other one was with Leo P of Too Many Zooz. The partnership emerged out of a jam session in front of thousands at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. This turned into a string of concerts beside Leo P. The band is most popular when it comes to Live Shows. Their wild costumes, props, and choreography create a great impact on the audience.
The live show has taken Five Alarm Funk on countless North American coast to coast tours. The band members have performed at over 100 festivals in the last three years. The group has also begun making performances in Taiwan, Mexico, as well as a performance for international peacekeeping forces, which was held in Mali.
