Fennesz Information
Christian Fennesz (December 25, 1962) is an Austrian guitarist and producer. After picking up a guitar at the age of 8 or 9, he was hooked. After starting with the Austrian experimental rock band Maische, he went solo and signed with the Mego record company specializing in electronic music. He started using a laptop to create music under the influence of techno. He was first heard on his 1995 EP Instrument, which delved into electro-acoustic and ambient sounds.
Hotel Paral.lel, Fennesz's first full-length album, was published in 1997, and it marked his first forays into laptop production and the aesthetics of early glitch. After that, in 1998, he released the single Plays, which had covers of "Paint It Black" by the Rolling Stones and "Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" by the Beach Boys, which were barely recognizable as the originals. In the following years, he worked with many different musicians, most notably Peter "Pita" Rehberg and Jim O'Rourke as Fenn O'Berg. After the success of his previous two albums, he returned in 2001 with Endless Summer, which was met with even more critical acclaim.
The following years saw him working with David Sylvian, Keith Rowe, eRikm, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, and the release of critically acclaimed albums Venice (2004) and Black Sea (2007), both of which featured collaborations with other notable musicians. 2009 saw the release of In the Fishtank 15, a collaboration between Fennesz and Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse). Fennesz put out Szampler, a cassette of samples, on the Tapeworm label the next year. A remix by Stefan Goldmann titled Goldmann vs. Fennesz: Remiksz was published a while after the original.
