Farhad Darya Information
Farhad Darya (September 22, 1962) is an Afghan philanthropist, singer, composer, and music producer. He was born in Gozar Gah, Kabul. His ancestors were from the province of Kunduz. He is Sher Khan Nashir's grandson. Returning to Kabul from Kunduz, he attended his final year of high school at Habibia before enrolling at Kabul Polytechnic University and forming his band there. After transferring to Kabul University to study Persian literature after threats to force him to join the PDPA, he eventually left the university.
Darya's new folk-pop group Goroh-e-Baran (literally "Rain Band") premiered on Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) with members Asad Badie, Wahid Saberi, Mokhtar Majid, and Jawad Rahi. Through the success of songs like "Aay-e-Mann," "Roz-e-Bazar," and "Dokhtar-e-Sardaar" in the 1980s, the band rose to prominence as one of the most popular acts of the decade. A solo artist after Goroh-e-Baran's dissolution in 1986, he claims credit for introducing multitrack recording to Iran.
In 1990, Darya escaped Afghanistan and went to Germany through Prague and Paris. While living in exile, he began working on new material for his 1992 album Begum Jaan, which featured more experimental music. He recorded this material in Paris and Hamburg. The song "Kabul Jaan," which translates to "Beloved Kabul," was a huge hit. After the Mujahideen insurgents entered Kabul, they reportedly played this song. Nine years later, when the Taliban administration fell, it was the first song aired on Radio Afghanistan.
