Everett Silvertips Information
The Everett Silvertips are a major junior ice hockey club that competes in the Western Hockey League (WHL) as part of the U.S. Division. The Everett, Washington-based squad debuted in the 2003–04 season with the Western Hockey League (WHL). It was the silvertip bear that inspired the team's moniker.
A multi-use arena constructed in 2003 for $71.5 million, Angel of the Winds Arena can accommodate 8,300 hockey fans (or 8,513 if standing-room-only seats are counted). The silvertip bear Lincoln, named after the USS Abraham Lincoln, an aircraft carrier stationed at Naval Station Everett during that period, serves as the squad's mascot.
The Silvertips' rivalry with the Winterhawks and Thunderbirds of Portland began while the team was in Seattle. When the Silvertips played their debut season in the U.S. Division of the WHL, they broke at least ten junior hockey records for an expansion club, cementing the franchise's position as one of the most successful expansion teams ever.
As a goaltender, Carter Hart was instrumental in Everett's sixth U.S. Division championship and his repeated selection as the league's MVP. With captain Noah Juulsen at the helm of the defense, the "Scrabble Line"—Patrick Bajkov, Dominic Zwerger, and Matt Fonteyne—scored most of the goals.
When fourth-liner Cal Babych scored in the 6th overtime of game six—the longest game in junior hockey history—the team won a hard-fought first-round series against the Victoria Royals.
