Esperanza Spalding Information
Esperanza Emily Spalding is a bassist, singer, songwriter, and composer. She has received several honors, including five Grammys, a Boston Music Award, and an honorary doctorate from both Berklee College of Music and CalArts, her alma school. Following her debut album, Junjo, in 2006 on the Spanish label Ayva Musica, Spalding signed with the indie American label Heads Up, who then published her 2008 self-titled album.
Apart from penning and singing songs, Spalding also taught at Berklee College of Music, starting at age 20. In 2017, she was appointed professor of music practice at Harvard University. She retired from this position in 2022.
Spalding collaborated with Wayne Shorter on a new operatic piece called Iphigenia in 2020 and 2021, with Spalding penning the libretto. The opera debuted at a few venues on both sides of the U.S. in the fall of 2021 and in February 2022. National Sawdust staged the premiere of Spalding and Jojo Abot's opera, "A Good of Her Own Making," on September 24, 2022.
