Eric Harland Information
Eric Harland (November 8, 1976) is an American jazz drummer. He was born in Houston, Texas. Harland started as a professional musician in 1993 while still a high school student at Houston's prestigious High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. In 1992 and 1993, Harland was the first chair alto saxophonist in the Regional and All-State Texas Jazz Bands. In 1994, the International Association for Jazz Education presented him with a Citation for Outstanding Musicianship. Wynton Marsalis suggested that Harland moves to New York City to further his education during a high school workshop.
Harland received a full scholarship to study music at the Manhattan School of Music, which he enrolled in immediately after high school. After finishing his musical training, he studied theology at Houston Baptist University (College of Biblical Studies), where he was eventually ordained. Harland has shared the stage and studio with many illustrious musicians, including Mark Turner, Larry Grenadier, Ravi Coltrane, Wynton Marsalis, Betty Carter, Joe Henderson, Walter Smith III, Aaron Parks, John Patitucci, and Zakir Hussain.
In the fall of 2010, Harland unveiled his first full-length record to the world under the title Voyager: Live by Night. The cast includes Harish Raghavan, Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, and Walter Smith III. On August 11, 2014, Harland released Vipassana, his second studio album. Harland and business partners Daniel Rovin and Austin White launched a cutting-edge recording studio in New York City in April 2017 under the name GSI Studios.
