Elvin Bishop Information
Elvin Richard Bishop (October 21, 1942) is a rock and blues music singer, bandleader, songwriter, and guitarist born in Glendale, California. He is an original member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. In 2015, Bishop was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the group. He attended Will Rogers High School, where he won a full scholarship to the University of Chicago as a National Merit Scholar. He met Paul Butterfield, who was a harmonica player in 1963 and soon joined his blues band and stayed for five years.
Bishop has worked with a few record labels throughout his career, including Capricorn, Blind Pig, Alligator, and Delta Groove. He went solo in 1968 to form the Elvin Bishop Group. He also performed with Bloomfield and Al Kooper on their album entitled “The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper.” He sat in with the Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West in San Francisco on June 8, 1969. Bishop opened the second act with his lengthy blues jam named “Turn on Your Lovelight.” With the Dead, he played two more songs, including “Who’s Lovin’ You Tonight” and “The Things I Used to Do.”
Elvin Bishop’s album “Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio” received a Grammy Award nomination for the Best Traditional Blues Album. He released countless notable studio albums, some of which include Let It Flow (1974), Juke Joint Jump (1975), and Hometown Boy Makes Good (1976).
