El Gran Silencio Information
El Gran Silencio is a Monterrey, Mexico-based rock en español band that combines rock, reggae, dancehall, and hip-hop elements with traditional Latin American musical traditions, including cumbia and vallenato and Norteño. The current lineup of the group consists of Cano Hernández (vocals and guitar), "Wiwa" Flores (vocals and guitar), Tony Hernández (vocals and guitar) and Isaac "Campa" Valdéz (accordion).
El Gran Silencio's initial recording was on a local, independent label, but Libres y Locos, released in 1998, was their first commercial release. It had an immediate impact on the Spanish-language rock scene, combining rap-style lyrics with a ranchera attitude.
The musical blend on El Gran Silencio's second album, Chuntaros Radio Poder (2001), was extended, and the rap aspect diminished. This album begins with a diverse range of styles, including rock akin to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and powerful Latin American rhythms ranging from Norteño to cumbia and vallenato. Chúntaro Style, an alternative hit from the album, was released.
El Gran Silencio was first recorded in Mexico, but it has since been recorded in the United States. Their only chart appearance in the United States is a duet with Juan Gabriel on the Kumbia Kings' tune No Tengo Dinero.
El Gran Silencio has released other albums as well, including Chúntaros Radio Poder (2000), Super Riddim Internacional Vol.1 (2003), Comunicaflow Underground (2006), Vi - Vo (2008), and Revolusound vs. Systema (2010).
