Echo & the Bunnymen is a group from Liverpool, England, that played rock music in 1978. Ian McCulloch on vocals, Will Sergeant on guitar, and Les Pattinson on bass were the band's initial members. 1980, the band's drummer, Pete de Freitas, became a member. Their first studio album, Crocodiles, debuted in 1980 and reached number 20 on the UK Albums Chart.
The band went from cult fame with 1981's Heaven Up Here to mainstream success in 1983, when "The Cutter" reached number ten in the UK, thanks to the release of their second album. The band's popularity in the UK continued with Ocean Rain (1984), whose lead song "The Killing Moon" reached the top ten.
Meteorites, the most current studio album by Echo & the Bunnymen, was released in the US on June 3, 2014, and in the UK on May 26, 2014, via 429 Records. The website Pledge Music served as the album's distribution channel. Youth did much of the production and mixing, co-writing three songs and adding bass. The album was the first for the group to reach the UK Top 40 since 1999.
Mixed reviews greeted Echo & the Bunnymen's 2018 album, The Stars, the Oceans & the Moon, which featured symphonic arrangements of previously published songs and two brand-new compositions. The band performed Ocean Rain in the UK as part of a four-show tour in September 2023.
