Eastern Music Festival Information
When Sheldon Morgenstern founded what is now known as the Eastern Music Festival in 1961 on the campus of Guilford College, he did so with one goal in mind: to create a summer music camp where the focus of the study would be on the student, something he had not found to be the case at other camps.
Morgenstern secured enough money and support to host the first camp in the summer of 1962 with the help of Dr. Clyde Milner, the then-president of Guilford College, and a group of similarly enthusiastic friends and relatives. Seventy-two undergraduates and fourteen graduate-level professors took part in the inaugural year. Over two hundred young artists and seventy-five or more seasoned faculty musicians worldwide have joined the program since then.
Sheldon Morgenstern (1930-2007), the company's founder, first came to Greensboro when he was a child. After playing French horn in the orchestra at Greensboro Senior High School (now Grimsley), he went to Northwestern University to major in French horn and direct.
Returning to Greensboro and the Guilford College music department satisfied his desire to instruct. He was the festival's chief conductor and director of music from 1961 to 1997. His spirit lives on in the hearts of our teachers, students, and patrons.
