Dua Saleh Information
Dua Saleh is a Sudanese-American actor and singer. He was born in Kassala, Sudan. Saleh went to Saint Paul Central High School, and they attribute their interest in community activism to learning about risk, systemic oppression, and the importance of fighting back. Saleh attended Augsburg University after finishing high school, where they concentrated on both sociology and gender, women's, and sexuality studies.
When Saleh was four years old, they started writing poetry, and by the time they were a senior in high school, they had already played at their first open mic. At Augsburg University, they wrote poetry as a means of self-exploration and continued to perform in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul region. Their recording of "Pins and Needles," a poem they wrote, was uploaded to the Button Poetry YouTube account in 2017 and had over 100,000 views by 2018. As part of Intermedia Arts' Queer Voices series, they've also played there.
They say that Saleh was "super-sheltered" as a kid and spent his formative years immersed in classic Sudanese music and Nancy Ajram. They acquired a laptop in high school and listened to many 1940s jazz before moving on to hip hop from the '90s. Afterward, Saleh "went through a year or two of finding as many queer artists as [they] could," naming artists like Mykki Blanco, Le1f, and Kilo Kish as examples of those who "saved [their] life" during this time.
