Deep Banana Blackout is a funk/rock band from New York and Connecticut that formed in the summer of 1995 to play soul and R&B songs from the 1960s and 1970s for the pure love of the music.
James "Fuzz" San Giovanni, Eric Kalb, Benj LeFevre, Jen Durkin, Rob Somerville, Rob Volo, Cyrus Madan, and Johnny Durkin are members of DBB. Hope Clayburn, sax/flute/vocals, and Bryan Smith, trombone/vocals, were previous members.
The band quickly established itself as a powerful musical force on the East Coast's underground live music scene. This eight-piece band is known for weaving their compositions involving extended improvisation with Sly and the Family Stone songs, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, and Parliament/Funkadelic. They have a full horn section and a soulful groove rooted in the roots of funk.
The Webster Theater in Hartford, Connecticut, and Irving Plaza in New York City has sold out for Deep Banana Blackout (1100 capacity). In 2000, they performed at the Newport Jazz Festival and were the subject of a feature article in JazzTimes.
