David Virelles Group Information
David Virelles (1983) is a Cuban jazz composer and pianist born in Santiago. At seven years old, Virelles began classical piano lessons; growing up, he was exposed to many styles of Cuban music. Jane Bunnett, a Canadian pianist he met in Cuba, urged him to visit her in Toronto. Ultimately, he enrolled at Humber College and the University of Toronto. Along with Bunnett, Virelles performed and recorded several times, including the CD Alma de Santiago (2001) by Bunnett.
Around 2006, he began corresponding with saxophonist Steve Coleman via phone and email; Coleman provided him with in-depth answers to his musical questions. After receiving a scholarship from the Canada Council for the Arts, Virelles was able to study in New York under Henry Threadgill. After making New York City his permanent home in 2009, Virelles began performing alongside prominent jazz figures, such as Chris Potter, Mark Turner, and saxophonists Coleman and Potter.
In 2010, Virelles played in an improvisational trio with Ben Street on bass and Andrew Cyrille on drums. The pianist eventually expanded the trio to include percussionist Román Díaz. When Potter released The Sirens in 2011, Virelles contributed as a prepared pianist, celeste, and harmonium player. The 2014 release of Mbókó was Virelles' first as a leader at ECM Records.
