David Benoit Information
David Bryan Benoit (August 18, 1953) is an American composer, producer, and jazz pianist from Bakersfield, California. Currently based in Los Angeles, California, Benoit studied piano at 13 and attended Mira Costa High School. During his college years, he focused on theory and composition at El Camino College and, at the same time, learned orchestration with Donald Nelligan. Benoit also worked with Jeffrey Schindler, who is the Music Director for the UC Santa Barbara symphony orchestra.
David Benoit initiated his professional career as a conductor and musical director for Lainie Kazan in 1976. Freedom at Midnight (1987) is the GRP Records debut album by Benoit, which made it to number 5 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums. His first album was followed by another entitled Waiting for Spring (1989), a number 1 hit on the chart. Some other notable albums produced by Benoit are Waiting for Spring, Shaken Not Stirred, The Stars Fell on Henrietta, Remembering Christmas, American Landscape, Great Composers of Jazz, Here's to You, Charlie Brown: 50 Great Years!, and The Benoit/Freeman Project 2.
As a sideman, Benoit has worked on 1975 The Man Incognito, Alphonse Mouzon; 1988 The Real Me, Patti Austin; 1992 Tropical Pleasures, Kilauea; 1999 The Dance, Dave Koz; and 2014 David Pack's Napa Crossroads, David Pack. Benoit has also performed at the White House for three U.S. Presidents; Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and George Bush Sr. Benoit has earned three Grammy nominations for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance, Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance, and Best Instrumental Composition.
