Danilo Perez Information
Danilo Perez (December 29, 1965) is a Panamanian social activist, educator, composer, and pianist. He was born in Panama. When he was ten, Pérez began training on European classical piano at the National Conservatory in Panama. Pérez received a Fulbright Scholarship in 1985 to continue his education in the United States. Pérez started at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, but after receiving the Quincy Jones Scholarship, he switched to Berklee College of Music.
He shared the stage alongside jazz greats like Jon Hendricks and Terence Blanchard as a student, as well as Claudio Roditi and Paquito D'Rivera. After graduating from college with a degree in jazz composition, Pérez began touring and recording with musicians including Jack DeJohnette, Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Tito Puente, Wynton Marsalis, Tom Harrell, Gary Burton, and Roy Haynes.
Two occurrences in 1989 profoundly impacted Pérez's creative process and his philosophy of music as a vehicle for social change. Pérez joined Dizzy Gillespie's United Nation Orchestra as the youngest member ever that year. Until Gillespie died in 1992, Pérez remained a member of the United Nations Orchestra.
